NB Courier, Sat 04 Feb 1854: "The late talented George N. SMITH, Artist was a native of Scotland and educated in the High School of Edinburgh. He was in near relationship with the celebrated Adam SMITH, the distinguished author of 'Wealth of Nations' and 'Theory of Mortal Sentiments'. He went to Iceland early in life where he was engaged as an Artist. His views of the Lakes of Killarney were engraved and published in Dublin to which was appended 'Itinerary or Guide to the Lakes'. He emigrated to this Province with his family 30 years ago and was soon after his arrival a sufferer by the great fire at Miramichi. His published description of that calamity did much to arouse public sympathy which was generously extended to the inhabitants of that district. On Capt. HARD being appointed Surveyor General of the Province, Mr. SMITH, under him, had the direction of the Land Office; he afterwards became propriertor and published of St. Andrews 'Standard' which he resigned in favour of his son about 14 years ago when he came to reside in this city and resumed his early and more congenial pursuits. (see original for evaluation of his skill as an Artist)" - Source: Daniel F Johnson's New Brunswick Newspaper Vital Statistics.
