Hotel Renovation complete.

A $2.5 million renovation program has been completed at CP Hotels' the Algonquin in St. Andrews. Major thrust of the project centered on the bedrooms and suites with private baths and showers being added to very room. Other renovations included the addition of four 50-seat meeting rooms; installation of new refrigeration, food-preparation and dishwashing equipment in the kitchen, construction of a 15-seat coffee shop.

The renovation program has been completed at the Algonquin Hotel. The program, which got underway in March last year, was designed to modernize the hotel's accommodation and dining facilities. The 200-room hotel, located on Passamaquoddy Bay 18 miles from St. Stephen/Milltown, has been operated by CP Hotels since 1973. The Algonquin is a summer-only resort and opens every year for a limited season. This year it will be in full operation from June 1 through to September 27.

"Our aim has been to modernize these facilities without disturbing the Algonquin's unique setting and charm," said James Frise, general manager. "And in both areas we have succeeded." Major thrust of the renovations have been centered on the bedrooms and suites. Private baths and showers have been added to every room. All rooms have also undergone thorough refitting and refurbishing. Bedroom corridors have been face lifted with alteration made to the lighting, carpets and walls. Four meeting rooms have been added to the hotel, increasing the number of conference facilities to seven. Conference rooms accommodate from 35 to 275 people. Audio-visual and technical equipment is now available.

The Algonquin kitchen has been re-designed to include new refrigeration, food preparation and dish-washing equipment. Last year, construction was completed on a 35-seat coffee shop that will allow guests to have a quick snack before heading to the various recreational facilities.

In the hotel's 375 seat dining room, the decor and lighting have been altered to provide a more intimate setting for evening dining. New facilities also include a redesigned lobby-lounge area where guests can write letters over a cup of coffee; an "attended" games room for children; a boutique; a casino that offers Saturday night dancing, bingo and a horse-racing game and an adult games room with billiards table, table tennis and tabletop shuffleboard. Other facilities to be found at the Algonquin include the 90-seat Dick Turpin's, an old English-style pub with live entertainment and the 96-seat Sunset Lounge which features relaxed after-dinner music and dancing.

On the recreational side, the Algonquin still offers everything a vacationer could ask for in a resort including a swimming pool, an 18-hole golf course, a similar nine-hole course, fishing, boating, championship tennis courts and cycling. The Algonquin is run exclusively on the modified American plan and rates start at $28 for a single room and $59 for a double.
