Ottawa Girl wins Long Suit for Pool Injury
Marilyn Noell injured in June 23, 1949. Dove off float into 3 feet of water; sluice gates had been opened. Was employed as waitress at Algonquin. Has obtained BA from Queen's extramurally, studying between operations. At present taking course in social work at U of T; only wheelchair student in residence. Awarded in excess of $9,000 plus $300 per month for life out of court and payment of all legal and medical expenses. Settlement described as "one of the highest settlements for personal damages that has ever been made in Ontario." 22 years old (b. 1931) Suit of $170,000 against CPR.

St. Andrews to appeal decision by Charlotte County Court to reduce tax assessment of CPR/St. Andrews Land Company properties. Long article only partly visible. 23 acres. General dispute over rate at which Hotel taxes rising with respect to Town. In 1948 $5,300; 1950, $9,560: 80 percent increase, whereas Town taxes rose only 35 percent. 1952 Algonquin taxes $15,920—up 66 percent, town only 3 percent.

C. F. Boyle New Owner of Park Hotel. History of Boyle's involvement in hotel business—mostly Fredericton and New Brunswick. "Mr. Boyle and his associates intend to make extensive renovations of the Park Hotel and to cater especially to commercial travellers and businesspeople." 52 bedrooms. All but 5 with private baths or running water.
Report shows this Province Hay Fever Haven. "All out ragweed eradication program inaugurated by province last spring." Campaign to continue this summer. New Brunswick travel Bureau publishing leaflet advertising low ragweed stats.

New Manager for Algonquin Hotel. E. C. Fitt transferred to Lake Louise. D. A. Williams, asst. manager at Empress since 1941, will as of April 1 manage Algonquin. Fitt joined Hotel department in 1927 in Montreal. Assistant manager at Louise from 1946. Prior to Algonquin was acting manager at Hotel Saskatchewan and Royal Alexandra in Winnipeg. Today Confederation life Assoc. arrives by special train from Montreal. 300 strong. Probably only special train for June conventions.

Louis Kronenberger, "a smallish sort of man with the appearance of being deep in thought at all times," one of the editors of Time Magazine, in St. Andrews for summer, where he spends most of the time at a typewriter desk at second story office on trips from cottage on hill.

D. A. Williams announces record season—fewer conventions but more guests. Digby Pines and Lakeside in Yarmouth similar. August especially heavy. More from Southern States and Mexico. The three hotels employ a total of 500 university students. Only skeleton staff remaining now.
